In March 2024, the United Nations declared a new International Day of Play on June 11th, the theme of 2025 is ‘Choose Play – Everyday!’
Play is more than just fun, it’s a fundamental right of every child. Children in Hospital (CIH) Ireland recognises that just because a child is in hospital, it does not mean their right to play is suspended. CIH has championed play in hospital for more than 55 years. Play is a crucial element to a child’s development and recovery.
The Power of Play in Hospital
- Play strengthens and supports the connections between the neurons of the brain and provides a rich opportunity for physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social development.
- Play can be help relieve stress and work through different emotions and experiences. It can help children in hospital build resilience and confidence within a hospital setting and build the skills to help cope with their illness or injury.
- Play can offer preparation for or a distraction during medical procedures and tests.
- For children in hospital play is one of the few opportunities for them to have control over some aspect of their care.
- Play can help create a sense of normalcy and foster connections between children and hospital staff.
Recently, a CIH play volunteer said “I once spent half an hour playing with a young girl recovering from a head injury who was struggling with memory loss. As I got up to leave, she smiled and said, “I don’t remember much… but I think I’ll remember this one.” That moment reminded me how powerful even the simplest acts of play and kindness can be.”
